2004 Conference Highlights
As soon as the doors opened on the 2004 San Francisco Writers Conference, it was clear the event deserved its rightful place as one of the best conferences in the country. The first-time event drew 300 attendees and over 120 bestselling authors, agents, editors and publishing industry professionals. In fact, the event exceeded the SFWC organizers' projections for attendance by 50%. The conference proved to be an amazing opportunity for professionals in the publishing industry to network, while new "ready to be published" writers were able to meet one-on-one with the right people.
The popularity of Speed Dating for Agents made for one packed room, but lots of excitement and successful interviews for participating writers and agents. In 2005 the event will be held in a bigger ballroom and ONLY attendees will be able to pitch their books to agents from New York, Los Angeles and the Bay Area in one-on-one, three-minute consultations. This option is only an additional $35.

2004 Conference
Below are some words of appreciation from Elisa Southard and Deirdre Watt, attendees of the 2004 conference.
CONFERENCE CALL
By Elisa Southard, Author of "Break Through the Noise."
Ears press to golden words from stewards of success
Sitting in Paneled rooms beneath the golden gate
Attendees carry tall, iced Best Sellers
Aspiration overflows from purses, pockets, pens
Spills onto carpeted stairways into colorful conversations
The industry demands discipline
The artist a disciplined pen
As the weekend progresses
Opportunities swell beyond the golden gate
Couples both coasts
Aspirants and stewards alike vow
Partnership to the reader
Morning after conference close
Creativity crosses the golden gate
Writers bring wiser ways to crisp vellum
Discipline walks across carpets to quiet studios
To the promise of the pen
The page awaits.
The pager too.
For that consequential call
The call from the conference.
ODE TO THE SAN FRANCISCO WRITERS CONFERENCEby Deirdre Watt, a Los Angeles Pre-Published Author 2/16/04
Skeptical was I.
When "FIRST Annual" I read.
Surely chaotic,
If this be the FIRST they've led.
"Poorly organized,"
Whispered the voice in my head.
Better off I'd be--
Just staying in my own bed.
Take a chance, did I,
Though filled with apprehensive dread.
Shocked and amazed when
Into the first class I tread!
Authors, journalists--
Giving us Advanced Writer's ed.
Everyone focused
Helping us to be well-read.
Speed Dating Agents and
Open Mic Nights kept us from bed.
Treated like Kings and Queens,
Pampered, coddled, and well-fed.
"Pretty impressive,"
My little voice now said.
What a conference!
Inspiration for my head!
And on my way home,
A thought occurred when I fled:
Next year at this time,
To Ol' San Fran I will head!
So much fun had I!
GONE TO HEAVEN, THOUGHT I WAS DEAD!
